Microsoft .NET is a collection of computing technolgies forming the
latest step in the evolution of Microsoft software. There are a number of
elements the core one being the .NET framework which offers a much simplified
development process, bringing together different languages and methodologies
under one umbrella.
We are moving all future development from Visual Basic to the new C# ( C sharp
) language which has been developed from C++. C# unburdens us from some of the
limitations and Mickey Mouse aspects of VB. Future Web and desktop applications
will be written in C#. One of the biggest implications to Web application
development arises from the arrival of ASP.NET which offers a much simplified
Web development process. XML capabilities are core to .NET tools and provide
for much simplified data exchange between applications.

SQLServer
2000 |
In SQL server version 7 Microsoft at last had a robust, quick and
serious RDBMS. SQLserver version 2000 is even better. Its quicker and the
inbuilt support for web and XML capabilities provides for the rapid development
of tightly integrated applications. SQL server is now capable of managing very
large, high volume transaction systems. It is also very simple to configure and
has a very small overhead in terms of maintenance or support all of which can
be done remotely.
Some exciting developments are happening right now in the SQL server
world, firstly Reporting Services is now available to download if you already have a SQL-2000 license
and the next release of SQL server (Yukon) is imminent.

Access is thought by some people to be a toy database system but
many clients run their whole business very successfully on one or more Access
databases. It is very cheap, immensely flexible and very quick to develop
applications. It has brilliant reporting and query tools and it is very simple
to import and export data between other databases and Office applications. It
is also useful as a client application to other database servers.
